by Scott Collura
May 4, 2009 - The Star Trek reboot hits theaters later this week. It is inevitable, like a Borg invasion fleet that's coming to assimilate you. So in anticipation of the film, we're offering up various Trek themed stories -- some of these have run already, and there are more to come, but today we're looking at the Top 10 Star Trek Movie Moments.
From space battles to lines of dialogue to character beats, we've tried our best to come up with the greatest sequences from the first 10 Trek movies. Not including, of course, the new film -- we'll wait until after that one comes out to fully discuss the new Star Trek.
So read on for our Top 10 Star Trek Movie Moments -- and then be sure to comment below and let us know what your favorites are…
10. The Captains Meet
Movie: Generations
Participants: Kirk, Picard
It was the moment that inspired a thousand pieces of fan-fiction, all of them bad. It was the day the two captains finally met -- Captain Kirk and Captain Picard, face to face. Could the universe as we know it bear the dramatic impact of such a colossal connection?

Trek's Best Villains
The Wrath of Khan, and the Borg, and Q, and...
by Phil Pirrello, Jim Vejvoda and Scott Collura
April 29, 2009 - They assimilated entire worlds. They killed Kirk's son. And they can't help but quote some Melville. They are Star Trek villains, and while there have been many, there are only a few who qualify as "Top Best". And by a few, I mean ten.
As IGN's resident Trekkies put on our yellow tunics and talk Genesis Device specs in anticipation for Team Abrams' Star Trek, we went back through all of the series and all of the movies (yes, even Insurrection) to find the Federation's best antagonists – both individuals and groups – that gave our starship captains cause to hit the bottle of Romulan Ale. Their schemes, their victories and their overall impact on Trek canon were used to separate the best from the "meh" (How's that whole Nexus thing working out for ya there, Soran?).
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one, and we need to give you our picks. Like what you see? Hate what you don't? Set your phasers to "talkback" and fire a few blasts at the Comments. Or if you just wanna talk Trek, IGN Stars' hailing frequencies are open. (Ok, promise, that will be the last Trek line reference.)
10. The Gorn
Stardate: "Arena" (Star Trek: The Original Series, Season One)
Any guy who doesn't blink and goes out in that outfit gets a mention.
Possibly the slowest moving bipedal lizard in all of science-fiction history, the Gorn is nevertheless considered one of Captain Kirk's greatest adversaries.
In the TOS episode "Arena," Kirk, his blood boiling after discovering the outpost on Cestus III destroyed by the Gorns, is pitted in unarmed combat against his reptilian counterpart by the omnipotent Metrons. The Metrons declare that whoever wins this duel will go free, while the loser and his ship will be destroyed. Teleported to an empty desert planet, Kirk and the Gorn are each provided with a device that Kirk believes is a recorder. It turns out not to be just that, and the hissing Gorn can instead use it to track Kirk's movements.
During the course of their death match, Kirk and the Gorn try to trap one another until Kirk finally gains the upper hand by making gunpowder from natural resources. Using a makeshift cannon and gems as projectiles, Kirk finally takes down his scaly opponent. Rather than gloat in his victory, however, Kirk shows his fallen foe mercy and rejects the Metron offer to destroy the enemy vessel. Kirk's kindness earns him a backhanded compliment from the Metron: "You are still half-savage, but there is hope." Little known Trek fact: Kirk later went back for the Gorn's carcass and made himself a sweet-looking pair of boots out of it. All right, fine, we made that last part up…
